Bethel Durant (son of Henry Durant Jr and Rebecca Warnock) was born 20 Oct 1779 in Horry County, South Carolina, and died 10 Jan 1826 in Horry. He married (1) Margaret Woodbury Gause on 12 Apr 1804, daughter of Benjamin Gause and Mary Woodberry. She was born 31 Jan 1787, Horry County, SC, and died 20 Apr 1814, Horry. He married (2) Martha Best (1792-1817) on 5 Nov 1814, Brunswick, NC and (3) HANNAH HANKINS (1797-1869) in Jan 1819 near Conwayborough, Horry District. He is buried Porter's Place,Horry, South Carolina.
In 1801, Bethel, John, Henry, and Thomas Durant were all signers of the petition to incorporate Horry County.
Bethel Durant's will mentions brothers Thomas, John, and Henry. Daughter Mary Ann was married (to George Durant Jr) at the time will was written on 18 Oct 1825. It lists wife Hannah, chldren John W. (minor), Henry H., Bethel, Sarah (minor), Martha. Witnesses to Bethel's will: Thomas Goddard Britton and Thomas Hemingway, husbands of his sisters. Bethel Durant and others of his family are buried in the old Durant Cemetery in Hickory Grove (Horry County). It is located in the front yard of the home of Elting and Margaret Holliday, Hickory Grove Township, SC off of HWY 905. This was part of the DuRant's Crabtree Plantation. (Information provided by Horry County Historical Society.)
The property used to be a Dairy Farm. The cemetery was located in the old cow pasture, a distance from the house. When Mr. and Mrs. Holliday moved in they collected the markers and placed them inside the driveway.
