Muse - Pope - Veale Families of Virginia and NC
John Tolleson's wife is now believed to have been Anna Barbary Muse, of Fairfield County, SC. Her brother, Thomas Muse, testified in 1819 that his sister had been married to John Tolleson. She left him in 1795 because of drunkenness, abuse, and threats against her life.
Anna Barbary was the daughter of James Muse and Sophia Pope. James Muse was born c. 1710 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and died in 1758 in Cumberland County, NC.
James Muse was the son of Thomas Muse (1665-1735) of Westmoreland County. The wife of Thomas Muse is not known. Thomas was the son of John Muse of Virginia. This may be the same John Muse whose cornfield is referred to in the Berry survey in 1742. There is also an area directly across from Longwood Swamp that is now called Muses Beach.
James Muse married Sophia Pope c. 1732 in Virginia. She was born c. 1710 in Virginia and died after July 1759 in Cumberland County, North Carolina.
Sophia Pope was the daughter of Humphrey Pope II (1674-1734) and Amey Veale (dau Morris and Dorothy Veale). Humphrey Pope II was the son of Humphrey Pope I, born in England about 1648. In 1661 he came to Virginia, where he married Elizabeth Hawkins (dau Richard Hawkins).
